World Chess champ Gukesh arrives to rousing reception
Chennai, Dec 16 (UNI) Newly crowned World Chess Champion D Gukesh was accorded a rousing reception at the Chennai airport when he arrived from Singapore on Monday.
A large number of fans gathered at the airport to accord a rousing reception to the World's youngest ever chess champion at the age of 18. Tamil Nadu government officials including SDAT Additional Chief Secretary Dr Atulya Misra, welcomed him with a garland and a bouquet of flowers and shawl.
In a brief chat, Gukesh said he was immensely happy to win the title and thanked all for the support. The young Indian Challenger dethroned defending champion Ding Liren of China in the crunch 14th and final game to seal the title and was crowned the King of 64 squares.
Gukesh secured 7.5 points as against 6.5 pts by Liren. President Droupady Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Wayanad Congress MP Priyanka, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and leaders of various political parties, sports personalities, including five time World Champion Vishy Anand, Sachin Tendulkar, among others, lauded Gukesh's feat.
Mr Stalin had already announced a cash award of Rs five crore for winning the World title.
