Join the Senior Journalists Association and Work for Your personal Welfare
— Prof. Dr. Jaipal Patil
Mumbai : The Senior Journalists Association is a nationwide organization working for journalists and non-journalistic employees. Senior journalist and editor Dr. Ram Agrawal and Shri Sanjaykumar Joshi jointly registered the organization with the Charity Commissioner, Pune, under Registration No. 144/2023.

The activities of the organization have expanded rapidly since January 2026. The President of the Association, Prof. Dr. Jaipal Patil, has appealed to senior journalists and non-journalistic employees to join the organization and work towards the welfare of themselves and their families.

At the national level, in addition to Maharashtra, the organization is currently working in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Goa and other states. Senior journalists, editors and non-journalistic employees from these states have responded positively by becoming respected members and office-bearers of the organization.
In the coming period, expansion programmes will also be undertaken in states including West Bengal and Jammu & Kashmir.

In Maharashtra, membership registration and appointment of office-bearers are progressing rapidly in Pune and Mumbai, as well as in Western Maharashtra, Konkan and North Maharashtra. Expanded activities in Vidarbha and Marathwada will be undertaken in the coming period. The organization seeks the cooperation and support of everyone for this initiative.
Objectives and Activities of the Senior Journalists Association -
It cannot be denied that many senior journalists and non-journalistic employees associated with print newspapers and online digital media have remained neglected from the time of their appointment. Millions of employees who have worked with great honesty, dedication and loyalty at the national level continue to face difficult circumstances.
During their employment, many have received inadequate salaries and faced uncertainty and insecurity. Insufficient income, loans taken to meet family needs, overdue instalments and humiliation at various stages have created a serious situation for many media employees.
As a result, their present and future after retirement can become extremely uncertain. In the absence of adequate financial assistance or support from their respective establishments or the government, many such employees and their families face difficult circumstances. Surveys and experiences concerning media employees, editors and journalists have highlighted these issues.
It has also been reported that around 15 to 17 senior journalists from Maharashtra have submitted an appeal seeking permission for voluntary death to the Hon'ble President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu. Such a situation is a matter of serious concern for Maharashtra. The Senior Journalists Association intends to study these issues comprehensively and work as a nationwide organization to address them.
In Maharashtra, many employees, journalists and editors associated with print and online digital media in several districts are facing difficult financial and professional circumstances.
After study and surveys, although each district has several issues, the most important common concern is the economic condition of journalists and media employees. Therefore, the Senior Journalists Association has undertaken work on the following important issues:
1. Unity and Organization
To organize and unite editors, journalists and non-journalistic employees at the national and state levels and build a strong collective platform for their welfare.
2. Accreditation and Related Facilities
To pursue, through the Central and State Governments, accreditation cards and the facilities associated with such accreditation, including bus and railway passes and other applicable benefits.
3. Health and Critical Illness Support
To work on health and treatment-related issues of media employees and to facilitate financial assistance for serious or critical illnesses affecting the member and his or her spouse.
Under the existing initiative of the Senior Journalists Association, financial assistance of up to ₹10 lakh (Rupees Ten Lakh) annually for critical illnesses has been arranged for members with the support of certain charitable organizations.
4. Welfare Board and Financial Support
To pursue, through constitutional and appropriate governmental mechanisms, the establishment of a separate welfare board for journalists and media employees, who are considered part of the fourth pillar of democracy, at both the Central and State levels.
The Association will also pursue provisions for welfare funds for such employees through the Central and State Governments.
Efforts will further be made to create financial opportunities for social-media journalists and digital platforms, including YouTube and similar digital media, apart from established newspaper chains, through government advertisements and other appropriate initiatives at the Central and State levels.
5. Recognition and Assistance
To assess the eligibility and contribution of employees who have performed their duties with exceptional dedication, honesty and diverse professional achievements, and to honour deserving individuals at the district, divisional, state and national levels.
The Association will also endeavour to provide assistance, wherever possible, through the Association, other organizations, and appropriate State or Central Government schemes and sources, to strengthen their financial and social well-being.
6. Training and Economic Empowerment of Families
Through the Senior Journalists Association, to establish workshops, conventions, training programmes and institutions for the families and children of members in areas such as modern technology, social and digital media, portals, YouTube, web pages, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and related subjects.
For these initiatives, the Association will seek the support and cooperation of experts and institutions at the district, divisional, state and national levels.
The Association will also facilitate training in entrepreneurship and business for the children of senior journalists and help them establish businesses and income-generating enterprises for their economic advancement.
7. Eligibility for Membership
Any person who is 55 years of age or above, whether retired or currently working, or who has worked in the media for 12 years or more, including retired persons, may become a member of the Association.
Both journalists and non-journalistic employees are eligible for membership. There shall be no discrimination or restriction on the basis of language, gender, caste or tribe. Persons working in both print and digital media are eligible to become members of the Association.
The membership registration fee for the current year is:
Maharashtra: ₹1,000/- (Rupees One Thousand only)
Other States: ₹1,500/- (Rupees One Thousand Five Hundred only)
The membership fee will be accepted only through online payment methods such as PhonePe or Google Pay, into the organization's designated account maintained with the Post Office, Government of India.
If membership or any position is cancelled for any reason, or is cancelled pursuant to a decision of the Trustees, the membership fee shall not be refundable.
8. Future Changes and Organizational Decisions
In other related circumstances, if changes are considered necessary from time to time for the development, welfare or cooperation of office-bearers and members, such decisions may be taken at the Trustee level after appropriate study and research.
Such decisions shall be binding on all members and office-bearers at the district, divisional, state and national levels of the Association.
