EPFO wage limit revision to cost Rs 56,700 crore over 5 years, will cover 5.1 million more workers
New Delhi (Special correspondent) - The revised wage ceiling of Rs 25,000 a month for mandatory coverage under the EPFO will cost the exchequer around Rs 56,700 crore over five years, the labour ministry said on September 16. The annual outgo would be Rs 11,339 crore.
Earlier in the day, the cabinet approved the ministry's proposal to raise the wage ceiling from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 per month.
The change will expand Employees’ Provident Fund Organisations coverage to an additional 5.1 million employees, widening the social security framework, the ministry said.
"This decision will not only provide a broader shield of social security to the country's workers but will also accelerate the formalisation of employment," labour minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.
