Google to establish safety engineering centre in Hyderabad
Hyderabad, Dec 4 (UNI) In a landmark development for India’s tech sector, Google LLC has announced plans to establish the Google Safety Engineering Centre (GSEC) in Hyderabad. This state-of-the-art facility will be the first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region outside Tokyo and only the fifth globally, joining other locations in Dublin, Munich, Malaga, and Tokyo. The GSEC is set to become a global hub for cybersecurity, focusing on advanced research, AI-driven security solutions, and innovative online safety products. It is expected to play a transformative role in strengthening India’s cybersecurity capabilities while generating thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Telangana secured this prestigious investment after intense competition among Indian states. Under the leadership of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the state government made a strong case during the CM’s visit to Google’s global headquarters in August 2024. Accompanied by Industries and IT Minister D Sridhar Babu, the CM successfully convinced Google of Hyderabad’s potential to host such a critical facility. “We are proud that Google has chosen Hyderabad for GSEC. This partnership underscores Hyderabad’s position as a global IT and innovation hub,” said CM Revanth Reddy. He highlighted how the project aligns with Telangana’s ambitious vision of becoming a $1 trillion economy and a global leader in cybersecurity. Royal Hansen, CIO of Google, praised Hyderabad as an ideal choice for the GSEC, describing the city as "perfectly positioned to become the global capital for safety engineering and cybersecurity."
The GSEC is expected to not only enhance India’s digital safety infrastructure but also foster collaboration between businesses, governments, and academia. It will support skill development and academic research, cementing Hyderabad’s reputation as a leading technology hub. Google and the Telangana government are also exploring broader collaborations. Potential initiatives include establishing a Google Cloud Centre of Excellence in Hyderabad, developing an AI-driven Intelligent Traffic Management System, enhancing the startup ecosystem through a Google Startup Hub, and supporting cybersecurity education via the Young India Skills University.
This partnership marks a new chapter in Hyderabad’s growth as a global technology and innovation powerhouse, further strengthening its position as a preferred destination for the world’s leading tech giants, an official statement said on Wednesday.
